The Mafia may have been on the rise back in the early years of the new millennium, but the criminal underworld in Chicago has always been a bit more mysterious.
The most recent case of Mafia-related murder in the city is in 2013, when a gang member named John Ritter was shot dead in a parking lot outside of a McDonald’s in West Garfield Park.
Ritter’s girlfriend, the 22-year-old who was allegedly the head of the Chicago Mob’s East Side operation, was also killed in that same shooting.
The victim’s name wasn’t released, but police say Ritter had ties to the gang.
The murder of Ritter took place after years of tension between the East and West sides of the city, where the Mafia’s leadership has historically been on opposite sides of that feud.
Ritters death came at the end of the most recent wave of murders of East Side gang members.
There have been numerous reports of shootings between rival gangs in recent years, including one shooting that happened last year in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
In 2017, there were two murders involving rival gangs and there were three homicides in Chicago in 2016 alone.
The West Side is also home to the most homicides in the entire country.
But what makes Chicago a particularly dangerous place for gang members?
What makes it so deadly for the average Joe?
In the past year, Chicago has seen a string of gang shootings, most of which took place on the West Side.
The East Side has also seen a surge in violence.
On January 1, 2017, four people were shot to death inside a home in the Englewood neighborhood.
Two people were also killed inside the West Garfield park neighborhood that year.
There were also five shootings that year in Lakeview, a city block west of the Englwood area, in which one person was shot and killed and two others were shot and injured.
Both shootings took place in the same block.
Two days later, on January 8, a gang of six people were found dead in an alleyway near the West Towne Plaza housing project.
The victims were all shot to the head, according to police.
Two months later, another person was killed and four more people were wounded in a shooting on a South Side neighborhood.
A month after that, in February, another shooting occurred in the Lakeview neighborhood that left two people dead.
And the violence continues.
On March 1, a 23-year old man was shot to die in a South Chicago neighborhood.
Four days later in March, a man was found shot to dead in the Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville.
On April 7, a 25-year–old man was fatally shot outside of his apartment on the South Side.
In May, a 28-year‐old man who was suspected of being involved in a gang dispute was found dead outside of the West Village housing project in Chicago’s Englemont neighborhood.
And on May 25, two people were killed in a fatal shooting outside of an apartment complex in the North Lawndale neighborhood.
The violence continues, and the murders are not limited to the South and West Sides.
In February, a gunman opened fire outside of another South Side apartment complex and wounded a woman who was inside.
And earlier this month, a 29-year‑old man in the South Chicago area was shot in the head while he was sitting in his car in a park.
There is no indication that gang violence is spreading throughout the city.
In fact, some of the shootings that have occurred on the streets of Chicago are believed to be related to rival gang turf wars.
One such shooting happened in the middle of the night on January 29, when two men were shot outside an apartment building in the West Austin neighborhood.
Authorities say the men were friends of one another, but they were not linked to the East Side Mob.
The shooting occurred just before midnight, but it was not immediately clear if the victims were connected to the Mob.
In addition to the murders of the men in the targeted area, the city has also witnessed the shooting death of an unknown number of people in recent months.
In the early morning hours of January 25, a 22- year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were shot in Engle Park, Chicago’s South Side, police said.
Authorities said the two were in the area with their mothers.
They were found lying on the sidewalk and were transported to a hospital, where they died.
The other victim, a 17‑year-old boy, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
On February 4, a 30-year old man allegedly killed his friend, a 35-year man, and two women.
Authorities later released photos of the alleged killer.
The two victims were identified as Joseph DePietro, a 20-year veteran of the force, and a 23‑year veteran, who also worked for the department.
Authorities have said that the suspect was believed
